Can anyone who saw this tune performed, or just even likes the live version(s), please enlighten BryanE.? It is not one that everybody may like, but so it goes. It was performed only three times.

[Just FYI: some reviews complain about the splices and only-god-knows-what-else.. so if you are a purist, you are defintely going to hate this version.

IF I HAD THE WORLD TO GIVE
Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Jerry Garcia

If I had the world to give
I'd give it to you, long as you live
Would you let it fall
Or hold it all in your arms?

If I had a song to sing
I'd sing it to you, long as you live
Lullaby
Or maybe a plain serenade
Wouldn't you laugh, dance and cry or be afraid
At the change you made?

I may not have the world to give to you
But maybe I have a tune or two
Only if you let me be your world
Could I ever give this world to you
Could I ever give this world to you

But I will give what love I have to give
I will give what love I have to give
I will give what love I have to give
Long as I live

If I had a star to give
I'd give it to you, long as you live
Would you have the time
To watch it shine, watch it shine?
Or ask for the moon and heaven too?
I'd give it to you

Maybe I've got no star to spare
Or anything fine or even rare
Only if you let me be your world
Would I ever give this world to you
Would I ever give this world to you

[@Robert Hunter, 1968-2007]

A supremely romantic tune...I remember playing the winterland one to my wife one Valentines...she was not impressed but then she's tone deaf...I liked the harmonica bits myself...

Well, I was at the October Winterland show...I saw and heard this one performed, so I can chime in on everything you have asked about...hmmmm...er...well, there you have it...

I am absolutely terrible about this at any concert--I connect to the old songs, and can never recall any new ones worth a damn! Only after hearing it repeatedly, usually by getting it on an album, or what have you, would I come to 'know' it and then be able to make more informed comments about having seen/heard it the next time I saw it in concert...

Sorry--cannot add anything of real substance here!

I'm now listening to the Drums->IIHTWTG sequence and I'm most certain this is where the chick gets up on stage inquiring about banjo lessons. The first review discusses this a bit more. Glad to know that some of my synapses are still functioning and that I didn't imagine the whole thing:

Ha--that is good...another tidbit I would not have made much note of, so I cannot help you...so, you were there too, eh?

Cool.

I seem to remember hearing one of these versions and during this show, on the 20th I believe, I believe, right before "If I Had the World", a tripped out girl makes it to the stage and starts talking to Jerry about banjo lessons. As if she thought he gave her banjo lessons at some point. He took it all in stride and soon enough she was whisked off stage. It's a foggy memory of a foggier event. Anyone know what I'm referring to? Maybe it was just an event in another time's forgotten space...

WOW I listened to the Winterland & Red Rocks twice and the Cleveland once -- they all sound pretty good to me - really like the Red Rocks instrumental part and to my ears the Cleveland seems to have the best Jerry vocals, not surprising as it is the earliest. Thanks for posting the links - now to check Reuben & Cherise

I love the Red Rocks version - at the end Jerry Fans the guitar till it seems his arm will fall off! Great stuff and into AIKO no less.

Goes to show- all bad things end up in Cleveland. (I actually like the tune, but couldn't resist picking on the city)

LOVE IT....up there in my book with COMES A TIME as a personal favorite jerry ballad...maybe the rarity makes it more special....but i love the versions of those tunes more than any STELLA BLUE...HIGH TIME.....or... OK it's hard to beat a good BLACK PETER, that song is just so special.....and WHARF RAT is too trippy to qualify as a true jerry ballad.....

IF I HAD THE WORLD TO GIVE rocks!!!!!!!

BUT, the deal is, here we find jerry channelling GEORGE HARRISON, tell me this cut dont sound like a george harrison #.....AND bobby's slide aint so bad, especially the 10/17/78 vers.

For what it's worth, the Taping Compendium says that the Nov 20th version is the best.
